Diabetes Mellitus Algorithm E: Eye Care

Patient with DM and no dilated eye evaluation within one year
Has patient's vision changed recently? [A] Refer for eye examination urgently Boxes 3 and 5 to box 14
Is DM type 1 or greater than 3 years duration? Reassess need for eye examination within 1 year [B]
Is any ocular risk factor present? [C] Refer for eye examination within 3 months [D]
Is patient newly diagnosed DM type 2 or on insulin? [E] Refer for eye examination within 3 months
Is there evidence of retinopathy on past examination? [G] Boxes 7, 9, and 10 to box 11
Follow-up examination every two years. Consider more frequent screening if patient is at increased risk for progression of retinopathy [H] Follow-up examination yearly or according to eye care provider-recommended schedule [F]
Box 12 to box 13 Provide Patient Education. Need for periodic eye examination. Compliance with follow-up schedule. Relationship between control and risk for retinopathy. Significance of new visual symptoms
